Symptoms

  • "Err 01 — Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts."
  • Error appears when stopping down, fine at wide apertures
  • Cleaning the contacts doesn't make the error go away
  • Aperture stays wide open regardless of the setting

Canon 24-105 error 01 is the classic fault of the EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM: sooner or later, most copies of this lens develop it. The cause is almost always the aperture unit, and we replace it at a fixed price of €150 — internal cleaning and focus check included.

The symptoms

Out of nowhere, the camera starts displaying: "Err 01 — Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts." You clean the contacts, the error comes back. Typically the lens still shoots wide open, but as soon as the camera asks for an intermediate or smaller aperture, the error appears — because the aperture never actually closes.

Our customer's lens failed exactly this way, halfway through a weekend trip, leaving him without his do-everything zoom. Fortunately he had other lenses with him and could keep shooting.

What causes it

Err 01 is a generic error: the camera is simply saying it cannot communicate correctly with the lens at that moment, and it can have many possible causes. On this specific lens, though, the diagnosis is nearly always the same. This is a known weak point of the EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM: the aperture unit stops receiving commands from the camera body and locks up. The blades stay wide open even when the camera requests a smaller aperture, communication fails, and the body throws Err 01.

Can you fix it yourself?

Follow the error message once: clean the gold contacts on the lens mount and the camera with a dry cloth and re-mount the lens. That genuinely solves the cases where dust or dirt on the contacts is the culprit. But on the 24-105 that is the exception, not the rule — if the error keeps returning, the aperture unit itself has failed, and no amount of contact cleaning will bring it back. Replacing the unit requires opening the lens, which is not a DIY job.

How we repair it

The customer shipped us the lens. Knowing this lens and this specific defect very well, the repair was quick: once the lens was opened, our technician confirmed that the Err 01 was indeed caused by the aperture unit — it remained open even when the camera commanded intermediate or smaller apertures. The damaged unit was replaced with a new one and the lens reassembled.

We used the opportunity to verify focus accuracy as well, and cleaned the internal dust out of the lens — both included. The lens went back to receiving the camera's commands without error, shooting correctly from wide open down to fully stopped down. You can see more jobs like this in our Canon repair department.

Frequently asked questions

What does Error 01 mean on the Canon 24-105?

Err 01 is a generic camera-lens communication error, but on the EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM it almost always means the aperture unit has failed and no longer receives commands from the body.

Does cleaning the contacts fix Canon Error 01?

Only if there is genuinely dirt or dust on the camera-lens contacts. On the 24-105 the error usually comes from the aperture unit itself, so cleaning brings no lasting improvement.

How much does it cost to fix Error 01 on a Canon 24-105?

We replace the aperture unit for a fixed €150, with internal dust cleaning and a focus accuracy check included.

Is Error 01 common on the Canon 24-105mm f/4 L?

Yes — it is the classic fault of this lens. Sooner or later most copies develop it; it is a known weak point rather than bad luck with your particular lens.
