- Canon 24-105 front glass damaged, lens still works
- Replace front element Canon 24-105 f/4 L
A scratched front element is one of the most common accidents we see on the Canon 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM, and a Canon 24-105 front lens replacement is the only proper way to fix it. We fit a new front element at a fixed price of €250, with internal cleaning and a full function check included.
The symptoms
The damage is usually obvious rather than subtle:
- One or more visible scratches on the front glass, typically after a drop or a knock without the front cap on.
- The lens and camera keep working normally — autofocus, zoom and aperture are all fine.
- Depending on the depth of the scratches, you may notice flare, reduced contrast or soft patches when shooting against the light.
Even when image quality is barely affected, most photographers understandably do not want to work with — or resell — a scratched L lens.
What causes it
The 24-105mm f/4 L is the classic walk-around lens: photographers who want to carry a single lens keep it mounted on the camera all day, which is exactly why we repair so many of them. A lens that lives on the camera is far more exposed to knocks and drops than one that lives in a padded bag, and the front element takes the hit first — especially when the lens cap is off.
In the case study below, the damage happened in a second of distraction: the camera fell face down with the lens mounted and uncapped, and the front element was heavily scratched.
Can you fix it yourself?
There is no DIY fix for a scratched front element. Polishing the glass at home removes the anti-reflective coating and alters the optical surface, which degrades the image far more than the original scratch. Toothpaste and scratch-filler tricks found online are equally bad ideas on a coated optical surface.
If the scratches are light, you can simply live with them and check your images for flare in backlit scenes. If they bother you or affect your photos, the element needs to be replaced — a full front-group disassembly job for a Canon lens repair lab.
How we repair it
A customer shipped us his 24-105mm after dropping his camera while changing a worn strap. The lens was mounted without its front cap and landed glass-first: camera and lens still worked perfectly, but the front element was heavily scratched and he wanted it back to proper condition.
Since this is a lens we repair very often, our technicians had the replacement front element already in stock and the job was quick: we opened the lens, fitted the new front element and reassembled everything. While the lens was open we checked all components — focus and aperture responded perfectly — and removed the small amount of dust that had collected inside. The lens went back to its owner with an immaculate front element, effectively like new.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to replace the front lens on a Canon 24-105?
We replace the front element of the EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM for a fixed price of €250, including internal cleaning and a full function check. Return shipping within the EU is €20 flat.
Do scratches on the front element affect image quality?
Light scratches often have little visible effect, but deeper scratches can cause flare, loss of contrast and soft areas — especially against the light. A heavily scratched element is worth replacing.
Can a scratched front lens be polished instead of replaced?
No. Polishing removes the coating and changes the surface geometry, making things worse. The only proper fix for a heavily scratched front element is replacing it with a new one.
Is it worth repairing a Canon 24-105 f/4 L?
Usually yes. It is a versatile L-series lens that holds its value, and a €250 front element replacement costs far less than buying a replacement lens.
