The symptoms

Alongside the error message, the behaviour varies:
- The lens keeps shooting, but only wide open — the aperture never stops down.
- In other cases, the lens cannot take a picture at all, not even at f/2.8.
- Cleaning the contacts on the lens mount makes no difference, or the error comes back after a few frames.
What causes it
Err 01 is a generic communication error: it simply means the camera body is not talking to the lens correctly at that moment. On the EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM, however, the cause is almost always the same — the aperture unit stops responding to commands from the camera body and locks up.

Can you fix it yourself?

On this lens, though, it is almost never enough. The fault sits inside the aperture unit itself, deep in the lens, and no amount of external cleaning can reach it. Replacing the unit requires a full disassembly of the lens, which is not a job to attempt at home.
