Canon 5D Mark IV C-Log Firmware Upgrade Service

Your 5D Mark IV has no Canon Log option in the movie menu? We install the official C-Log upgrade for a fixed €50, usually the same day the camera reaches us.

Symptoms

  • No Canon Log picture profile in the 5D Mark IV movie menu
  • Footage looks flatter or richer on another 5D Mark IV than on yours
  • Limited dynamic range when filming in difficult light
  • C-Log setting missing even after a standard firmware update

If you shoot video on the EOS 5D Mark IV, the Canon 5D Mark IV C-Log upgrade is probably the single most useful thing you can do to the camera — and many bodies never received it. We install the official Canon Log upgrade for a fixed €50, and the installation itself is done in a single day.

The symptoms

This one is not a fault, but it looks like one. A customer contacted us after borrowing a friend's 5D Mark IV for video work: the footage from the borrowed body graded beautifully, while files from his own, recently purchased 5D Mark IV looked different — noticeably less flexible in post. He initially feared he had bought a bad copy of the camera.

The real difference was simple: his friend's camera had Canon Log installed, his own did not. If your movie menu has no Canon Log profile, your camera is one of the many that never received the upgrade.

What causes it

Canon Log is a feature from Canon's Cinema EOS range that was offered for the 5D Mark IV as a separate, per-camera upgrade rather than a free downloadable firmware. That is why two identical-looking bodies can behave completely differently when filming: one has the upgrade installed, the other does not.

With Canon Log active, the 5D Mark IV is designed to gain up to an 800% increase in dynamic range, minimising loss of detail in the brightest and darkest parts of the image. At ISO 400 it delivers its widest dynamic range of 12 stops — ideal for shooting in difficult lighting. Because the profile changes how image data is processed after capture, it also makes colour matching far easier when cutting footage from different cameras, including Cinema EOS bodies, allowing a single colour-grading pass for a uniform final look. It also reduces noise, particularly in shadow areas, during grading.

Can you fix it yourself?

No — and this is worth knowing before you waste time. Downloading and flashing the standard firmware from Canon's website will not add C-Log; the upgrade is separate from regular firmware releases and has to be installed on the individual camera. There is nothing to unlock in the menus of a body that does not have it.

How we repair it

The customer shipped us his 5D Mark IV and we installed the official Canon Log upgrade. With C-Log enabled, the camera gained its full video recording potential, and the customer is now shooting with the same gradable footage that impressed him on his friend's body.

As with every job that comes through our Canon repair lab, before returning the camera we tested all the other functions to confirm the body performs fully to factory specification — the check is included in the price.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't my Canon 5D Mark IV have C-Log?

The 5D Mark IV did not ship with Canon Log enabled. It is a separate official upgrade that has to be installed on the individual camera body — a standard firmware update from Canon's website will not add it.

How much does the Canon 5D Mark IV C-Log upgrade cost?

We charge a fixed €50, and the installation itself is done in a single day once the camera is in our lab. A full function check is included.

What does C-Log actually improve?

Canon Log is designed to increase dynamic range by up to 800%, preserving detail in highlights and shadows. At ISO 400 it delivers its widest range of 12 stops, and it makes colour matching with other cameras much easier in grading.

Is the C-Log upgrade worth it on a 5D Mark IV?

If you shoot video, yes. It gives the camera the flat, gradable profile used across Canon's Cinema EOS range and reduces noise in shadow areas during colour grading — for €50 it transforms the camera's video output.
