Symptoms

  • Hazy or foggy photos from Canon 70-200
  • Low contrast and milky images in every shot
  • Visible spots or dots on internal lens elements
  • Condensation or moisture inside the lens
  • Fungus visible inside Canon 70-200

If your Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L USM suddenly produces hazy, low-contrast images, the cause is often canon 70-200 coating damage or moisture trapped inside the optical groups. The good news: in most cases the lens can be brought back to full optical performance, and we repair it at a fixed price of €450.

The symptoms

The problem usually shows up in the photos before you see it in the lens. Typical signs include:

  • Every shot looks slightly foggy or "milky", regardless of settings or light.
  • Contrast is noticeably lower than it used to be.
  • Looking through the lens against a light source, you can see spots, dots or a cloudy veil on the internal elements.
  • Traces of humidity or condensation are visible inside the barrel.

A customer contacted us after picking her 70-200 up again following more than a year of storage. On a wildlife walk with her Canon 7D, every frame came back with a light haze. Checking her gear, she found moisture and condensation inside the lens.

What causes it

Three distinct things can happen inside the optical groups of a lens: internal hazing, element separation (de-cementing), and damage to the anti-reflective coating. Moisture is a common trigger, particularly when a lens sits unused for a long time. Whether the optics can be restored depends on how severe the damage is and, above all, on which element is affected.

In this particular Canon 70-200, disassembly revealed more than the customer expected: fungus on one optical group, light hazing on two others, and one group whose coating was damaged beyond recovery.

Can you fix it yourself?

Not really. Wiping the front and rear elements only helps with external dirt — haze, fungus and coating damage sit on internal surfaces that can only be reached by fully disassembling the lens. Storing the lens in a dry place with silica gel can slow further damage, but it will not reverse it. Attempting to open a 70-200 f/2.8 L without the right tools and optical alignment equipment risks turning a repairable lens into scrap.

How we repair it

Our technicians completely disassembled the lens to reach the affected optical groups. The fungus was removed and that group returned to full clarity. The light hazing on two further groups was eliminated with a dedicated cleaning process. The most damaged group, however, had irreparable coating damage, so we replaced the entire optical group with a new original part.

The result: all internal optical groups clear as new, photos sharp and free of haze or artefacts in every shooting condition. As with every repair in our Canon lens repair service, we tested all other components against factory specifications before returning the lens.

Frequently asked questions

Can damaged lens coating be repaired?

It depends on the severity and the position of the damage. Light haze and fungus can usually be cleaned off. When the coating itself is irreparably damaged, we replace the affected optical group with a new original part.

What causes haze and coating damage inside a Canon 70-200?

Moisture and condensation trapped inside the lens are the usual culprits, especially after long periods of storage without use. Over time humidity attacks the coating and encourages fungus growth.

How much does it cost to fix coating damage on a Canon 70-200?

Our fixed price is €450, which covers cleaning of all optical groups and replacement of the damaged group with an original part. Internal cleaning and final testing are included.

Is it worth repairing a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 with internal haze?

Usually yes. The EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM is a professional lens that holds its value well, and a €450 repair is far cheaper than replacing it.
