Fujifilm XC 16-50mm OIS with broken plastic lens mount before repair

Symptoms

  • Fuji 16-50 lens mount broken after a drop
  • lens not recognised by the camera
  • cracked plastic bayonet on Fujifilm XC 16-50
  • lens wobbles or will not lock onto the body

A broken lens mount is one of the most common faults we see on the Fujifilm XC 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS: one drop and the plastic bayonet cracks, and the camera stops recognising the lens. A Fuji 16-50 mount replacement is a routine repair for us, done at a fixed price of €80.

The symptoms

After a fall — even a minor one — you may notice:

  • A visibly cracked or broken section on the side of the lens mount.
  • The lens no longer communicates with the camera: no aperture control, no autofocus, no EXIF data.
  • The lens feels loose, wobbles, or will not lock properly onto the body.

Even when the crack looks small from the outside, the flex cable behind the mount is often damaged too — which is what actually kills the communication.

What causes it

Unlike many lenses that use a metal bayonet, the mount on the 16-50mm is made of plastic, so it breaks much more easily. This is a known weak point of this lens: even a banal drop can be fatal for the mount. In the case we repaired, the customer dropped the lens while mounting it on the camera, and a side section of the mount snapped off. The fall also damaged the communication flex cable — the ribbon connector that carries all the data between camera and lens — which is why the lens stopped communicating entirely.

Can you fix it yourself?

If the lens is merely dirty on the contacts, cleaning them gently with a dry cloth can restore communication. But a physically broken mount cannot be glued: the bayonet has to hold the lens rigidly against the camera under load, and any adhesive repair will fail and risk dropping the lens again. Replacing the mount also usually means replacing the damaged flex cable behind it, which requires partial disassembly of the lens. We do not recommend attempting it at home.

How we repair it

A customer shipped us his XC 16-50mm after the drop described above. The mount was beyond saving, so our technicians replaced it completely, and since the lens no longer communicated with the camera, they also replaced the communication flex cable, which had been damaged in the fall. Once both parts were replaced, the lens was reassembled and put through a full function check.

The result: the camera reads the lens perfectly again, with no errors of any kind. While the lens was open we also verified that focus and aperture responded correctly to every command, and removed the dust that had collected inside — internal cleaning is always included with our Fujifilm repairs.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my Fuji 16-50 mount break so easily?

The XC 16-50mm has a plastic lens mount rather than the metal one found on many other lenses. Plastic mounts break far more easily, so even a minor fall can be fatal for the mount.

How much does a Fuji 16-50 mount replacement cost?

We replace the mount and the communication flex cable for a fixed €80, with internal cleaning and a full function check included.

Why does my camera no longer detect the lens after the drop?

In falls like this the communication flex cable — the ribbon that carries data between lens and camera — is often damaged along with the mount. Until it is replaced, the camera cannot talk to the lens.

Is it worth repairing a kit lens like the XC 16-50?

At a fixed €80 the repair typically costs well under the price of a replacement lens, and you get your lens back working like new with a 6-month warranty.
