What causes it

Can you fix it yourself?
There is one useful check you can do at home: turn the camera on and use the viewfinder. Beyond that, there is nothing to try: a physically broken panel cannot be revived by resets or battery pulls, and replacing it means opening the body and handling fragile ribbon connectors. We do not recommend attempting it yourself.
