Leica R 24mm f/2.8 Stiff Focus Ring Restoration
A stiff focus ring on the Elmarit-R 24mm f/2.8 is usually caused by a slight deformation of the filter holder, not worn helicoids. We restore the original smooth, damped feel at a fixed price.
Symptoms
- Leica R 24mm focus ring stiff or hard to turn
- Focus ring binds at certain points of its travel
- Elmarit-R 24mm focusing feels gritty, not smooth
- Manual focus requires excessive force
A Leica R 24mm stiff focus ring is one of the most common complaints we see on the Elmarit-R 24mm f/2.8 — the ring turns, but with far more resistance than Leica intended, often binding at specific points of its travel. The good news: this is fully repairable, at a fixed price, and without replacing any original parts.
The symptoms
Owners typically describe the same picture:
- The focus ring feels stiff or "dry" instead of the smooth, damped action Leica R lenses are known for.
- The resistance is not even: the ring binds harder at certain points of the focusing travel and moves more freely elsewhere.
- Precise manual focusing becomes tiring, because you have to force the ring past the tight spots.
Optically the lens is usually fine — the problem is purely mechanical.
What causes it
On this lens, the culprit is rarely the helicoid alone. When we examined the Elmarit-R 24mm in this case study, our technicians found a small deformation on the filter holder assembly. That slight distortion presses on the focusing mechanism and makes the ring stiffen at specific points of its rotation — which is exactly why the resistance feels uneven rather than uniformly heavy.
Aged, hardened grease in the focusing helicoids then compounds the problem, adding drag across the whole travel.
Can you fix it yourself?
There is very little a user can safely do. Exercising the ring back and forth may free it marginally, but it does not correct the deformation, and it can grind debris into the helicoid threads. Applying oil or penetrating fluid from outside is a genuinely bad idea: it migrates onto the aperture blades and lens surfaces and turns a mechanical service into an optical one. On a collectable Leica R lens, amateur disassembly also risks damaging engravings, retaining rings and the original finish — all things that affect value.
How we repair it
A customer shipped us her Elmarit-R 24mm f/2.8 asking us to make the focus ring smooth and fluid again. After careful inspection, our technicians confirmed the stiff focus action and traced it to the small deformation on the filter holder. They mechanically restored the deformed section to its correct geometry, so the ring could once again rotate freely through its entire travel.
The focusing helicoids were then cleaned and re-lubricated with fresh grease to bring back the properly damped feel. As a final step, the lens surfaces were cleaned with a medium/high-pressure air compressor to remove internal dust residues, and the lens went through our standard functional check before being returned. The result: a focus ring that turns as it did when the lens left Wetzlar. You can find our full Leica service range on our Leica repairs page.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the focus ring on my Leica R 24mm stiff?
On this Elmarit-R, the most common cause is a slight deformation of the filter holder assembly, which creates friction at specific points of the focus travel. Dried helicoid grease can add to the problem, but the deformation is usually the root cause.
Can a stiff Leica R focus ring be fixed without replacing parts?
In most cases, yes. The deformed section is mechanically restored to its correct geometry and the focusing helicoids are re-lubricated. No original parts need to be swapped out, which matters on a collectable lens.
How much does it cost to fix a stiff focus ring on a Leica R 24mm?
Our price is €350, fixed. It includes the mechanical restoration, helicoid lubrication, internal dust removal and a full functional check before return.
Is it worth servicing an Elmarit-R 24mm f/2.8?
Absolutely. It is a sought-after R-system wide-angle, and clean, properly serviced examples hold their value well. A correctly executed service preserves both the handling and the collector value.
