Leica R 50mm f/2 Stiff Focus Ring and Dust Cleaning
A Summicron-R 50mm f/2 with a stiff focus ring and dust behind the front element. We restore the focusing mechanics and clean the optics at a fixed price.
Symptoms
- Leica R 50mm focus ring stiff or hard to turn
- Focus ring binds at certain points of the travel
- Dust visible behind the front element
- Summicron-R 50mm focusing not smooth anymore
If you are searching for a Leica R 50mm f2 service, chances are your Summicron-R has developed the classic pair of age-related issues: a focus ring that has become stiff and uneven, and a veil of dust behind the front element. Both are fully repairable — we restore the focusing mechanics and clean the optics at a fixed price of €80.
The symptoms
- The focus ring turns with noticeably more effort than the smooth, damped action a Summicron-R should have.
- The stiffness is uneven — the ring binds at specific points of its travel rather than dragging uniformly.
- Looking through the front element against the light, you can see dust particles trapped inside the lens.
What causes it
When our technicians examined this Summicron-R 50mm f/2, they found the same root cause we regularly see on Leica R primes: a small deformation on the filter holder, which presses on the focusing mechanism and makes the ring stiffen at specific points of its rotation. Decades-old grease in the focusing helicoids adds further drag. The internal dust is simply a consequence of age — no lens is hermetically sealed, and every focus movement pumps a little air (and dust) through the barrel.
Can you fix it yourself?
Not really. The stiffness is caused by a geometric deformation, so no amount of working the ring back and forth will cure it. Oiling the ring from outside is actively harmful — the lubricant migrates onto the aperture blades and glass. And the dust sits behind the front element, so it cannot be reached without opening the lens. On a collectable Leica R lens, we strongly advise against improvised disassembly: marred slotted rings and scratched coatings permanently reduce both usability and value.
How we repair it
A customer sent us his Summicron-R 50mm f/2 with exactly this combination: stiff focus ring, dust behind the front element. Our technicians confirmed the diagnosis and mechanically restored the deformed section of the filter holder to its correct geometry, freeing the focus ring across its whole travel. The focusing helicoids were then re-lubricated with fresh grease to bring back the characteristic damped Leica feel.
With the mechanics sorted, the lens surfaces were cleaned using a medium/high-pressure air compressor to remove all internal dust residues. After reassembly the lens went through our standard functional check — focus travel, aperture operation, optical inspection — and came back, in the customer's words, like new. Frequently asked questions
Why is the focus ring stiff on my Leica Summicron-R 50mm?
On this lens the usual cause is a slight deformation of the filter holder, which creates friction at specific points of the focus travel. Hardened helicoid grease adds drag on top of that.
Does dust inside a Leica R 50mm affect image quality?
A few specks are harmless, but an accumulating layer of dust scatters light and can reduce contrast, especially against bright sources. It is also best removed before it attracts moisture and turns into a haze or fungus problem.
How much does a Leica R 50mm f/2 service cost?
Our combined service — focus ring restoration plus internal dust cleaning — is €80, fixed, including a full functional check before the lens is returned.
Is it worth servicing a Summicron-R 50mm f/2?
Yes. The Summicron-R 50mm is one of the great standard lenses of the R system, and a smooth, clean example is worth considerably more — to shoot with and to collect — than a stiff, dusty one.
