Symptoms

  • Nikon D5 grip rubber peeling or coming loose
  • Rubber covers swollen, shiny or sticky from use
  • Dark spots in photos at small apertures
  • Dust visible on the sensor

Nikon D5 rubber grip replacement is the service every hard-worked D5 eventually needs: years of professional use leave the grip rubbers loose, swollen or peeling, and the sensor collecting dust. Both problems are routine for us — we fit a complete new rubber kit and clean the sensor properly, at a fixed price.

The symptoms

  • Grip rubbers lifting at the edges, peeling away or sliding under your fingers.
  • Rubber panels that have gone shiny, swollen or sticky with use.
  • Dark spots in your photos, most visible at small apertures against plain backgrounds like sky — the signature of dust on the sensor.

What causes it

The D5's rubber covers are attached with double-sided adhesive tape. Heat, humidity, sweat and simple mileage degrade the rubber and the adhesive underneath — on a professional body that has lived on assignment, this is pure wear and tear, not a defect. Sensor dust has an equally mundane origin: every lens change lets particles into the mirror box, and over time some of them settle on the sensor where the blower in your bag can no longer shift them.

Can you fix it yourself?

Partially. Replacement rubber kits exist, but fitting them well means removing every old rubber, stripping the residue of the old adhesive completely and preparing the surface so the new adhesive actually bonds — skip that and the new rubbers lift within weeks. Sensor cleaning is riskier: careful blower work is fine, but wet-cleaning a full-frame sensor without the right tools and technique can scratch the cover glass. On a body of this class, a professional service is the sensible route.

How we repair it

A customer sent us his Nikon D5 with worn rubbers and a dirty sensor. After confirming the issues he had reported, our technicians began with the complete rubber kit: the old covers came off, the old double-sided adhesive was stripped, and the surfaces were cleaned with solvent so the new adhesive tape would bond properly before the new rubbers were fitted.

Then the sensor. With the battery fully charged — the cleaning procedure draws on it — the lens was removed and the mirror chamber blown out with a high-pressure compressor. The shutter was then opened and the mirror raised to expose the sensor, which was inspected with an illuminated loupe to assess the dust. The sensor was blown with the compressor at low pressure, to avoid any risk of scratching, and finally cleaned with a dedicated swab moistened with isopropyl alcohol. The camera was inspected again, verified fully working and returned to its owner. More Nikon body services are listed on our Nikon repairs page.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the rubber on a Nikon D5 peel off?

The grip rubbers are fixed with double-sided adhesive, and years of heat, sweat and heavy professional use degrade both the rubber and the adhesive. On hard-worked D5 bodies, loose or swollen rubbers are simply a wear item.

How much does a Nikon D5 rubber grip replacement cost?

Our price is €300, fixed, and it covers the complete rubber kit plus a professional sensor cleaning and a final functional check.

Can I clean my D5 sensor myself?

A blower used carefully can shift loose dust, but stubborn particles and residues need a wet clean with proper tools. Done wrong, a sensor clean can scratch the cover glass — an expensive mistake on a professional body.

Is it worth refreshing a used Nikon D5?

Yes. The D5 remains a superb professional body; fresh rubbers and a clean sensor restore both the handling and the resale presentation for a fraction of the camera's value.
