Nikon D500 with broken top cover and LCD before repair

Symptoms

  • Nikon D500 LCD broken or cracked after a drop
  • Top cover cracked around the strap lug
  • Top display glass shattered
  • Camera works but the damaged cover no longer protects it

A drop is the classic way a Nikon D500 LCD repair ends up on our bench: the camera tips over, the top cover takes the hit, and the LCD and its glass crack. The good news is that the D500 is a very tough body — and the damaged assembly can be replaced with original Nikon parts at a fixed price of €350.

The symptoms

  • Visible cracks in the top cover, typically around the strap lug or the point of impact.
  • The top LCD panel is broken or unreadable and its protective glass is shattered.
  • The rest of the camera may still work perfectly — the damage is concentrated where the body hit the ground.

Our customer Gabriele was shooting with his Nikon D500 on a tripod when a moment of distraction — helped along by the wind — sent camera and tripod to the ground in seconds. Fortunately, the D500 is a very robust camera: it suffered an extensive but localised fracture at the point of impact. The cover broke at the strap-lug attachment, and the top glass and LCD went with it. The rest of the body survived.

What causes it

This is pure impact damage. The top cover absorbs the energy of the fall and cracks; the LCD and its glass, mounted in the cover, break with it. On the D500 there is one small mercy: the camera has no pop-up flash in the top cover — if it had one, it would very likely have been damaged too and needed replacing as well.

Can you fix it yourself?

No — and it is worth resisting the temptation to just tape over the cracks and keep shooting. A fractured cover no longer seals the body against dust and moisture, and the broken flex cables behind the LCD can fail progressively. There are no user-replaceable parts here: the whole cover assembly must come off, which exposes the internal wiring of the camera.

How we repair it

Given the depth of the damage on this D500, the cover could not be repaired — we replaced it entirely with an original Nikon spare part. Along with the cover we replaced the LCD, the protective glass, and all the flex cables that connect the LCD and the cover controls to the camera body.

At delivery the D500 was back to new condition. We fully restored the damaged assembly, tested every other component to confirm compliance with factory specifications, and cleaned the sensor — included in the price, like every job in our Nikon repair service.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Nikon D500 LCD repair cost after a drop?

Our fixed price is €350, covering replacement of the complete top cover, the LCD and the protective glass, plus the flex cables connecting them to the body. Sensor cleaning and final testing are included.

Can a cracked Nikon D500 top cover be repaired instead of replaced?

When the damage is deep, as after a real impact, the cover cannot be reliably repaired — we replace it entirely with an original Nikon spare part.

My D500 fell but still works. Should I still have it checked?

Yes. Impact damage can hide beyond the visible cracks, so we test all components against factory specifications as part of the repair.

Is the Nikon D500 tough enough to survive a fall?

It is a very robust camera. In the case we repaired, a fall with a tripod caused extensive damage only at the point of impact — the rest of the body survived intact.
