What causes it

The flash tube itself can be perfectly healthy — without a trigger signal from the circuit, it simply never gets the command to fire.
Can you fix it yourself?
There are a couple of things worth trying before shipping the camera:
- Make sure the flash mode is not set to "off" and that you are not in a shooting mode that disables the flash.
- Perform a menu reset to rule out a settings problem.
If the flash still never fires in any mode, the fault is in the flash circuit. This is a board-level electrical repair inside the camera body — it involves high-voltage flash components and is not something to attempt at home. We never recommend opening the camera yourself.
