Nikon D5200 Flash Not Working: Circuit Repair

When the built-in flash of a Nikon D5200 stops firing, the cause is usually a failed flash circuit board. We replace it at a fixed price, with cleaning and final testing included.

Nikon D5200 with built-in pop-up flash not firing, before repair

Symptoms

  • Nikon D5200 flash not firing
  • built-in flash does not flash when taking a picture
  • pop-up flash dead on Nikon D5200
  • photos come out dark even with flash enabled

If your Nikon D5200 flash is not working — the built-in flash simply refuses to fire no matter what you try — the fault is usually inside the camera, not in your settings. The good news: it is repairable, and we do it at a fixed price of €130 with a free diagnosis first.

The symptoms

The problem is easy to recognise:

  • You press the shutter in low light and the built-in flash does not fire.
  • Switching flash modes (fill flash, red-eye, slow sync) makes no difference.
  • The rest of the camera works normally: it focuses, shoots and saves images — the photos are just dark.

Because everything else behaves normally, many owners spend a long time hunting through menus before accepting that the flash hardware itself has failed.

What causes it

In the case that came through our lab, our technicians examined the camera carefully and traced the fault to the power board of the flash circuit. This board supplies and triggers the flash: once it fails completely, it no longer sends any signal to the flash unit, so the flash never fires. The flash tube itself can be perfectly healthy — without a trigger signal from the circuit, it simply never gets the command to fire.

Can you fix it yourself?

There are a couple of things worth trying before shipping the camera:

  • Make sure the flash mode is not set to "off" and that you are not in a shooting mode that disables the flash.
  • Perform a menu reset to rule out a settings problem.

If the flash still never fires in any mode, the fault is in the flash circuit. This is a board-level electrical repair inside the camera body — it involves high-voltage flash components and is not something to attempt at home. We never recommend opening the camera yourself.

How we repair it

A customer contacted us about her Nikon D5200 saying the flash would not fire and she could not work out why. Our technicians analysed the camera and found that the flash circuit's power board had failed permanently and was no longer sending the trigger signal to the flash. The complete flash circuit was replaced with a new unit.

After the replacement, the flash was tested to confirm it fired perfectly, and the whole camera was checked again for any other issues — a final inspection we include with every Nikon repair. Nothing else was found, and the camera went back to its owner fully working.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Nikon D5200 flash not firing?

In most cases the flash tube itself is fine but the flash circuit board — the board that powers and triggers the flash — has failed. When that board stops sending the trigger signal, the flash never fires, regardless of your settings.

How much does it cost to fix a Nikon D5200 flash?

We replace the complete flash circuit for a fixed €130, with a full function check included. You know the price before you ship the camera.

Can a settings reset fix a flash that will not fire?

It is worth checking that the flash mode is not set to off and performing a menu reset, but if the flash never fires in any mode the fault is almost always in the hardware, not the settings.

Is it worth repairing a D5200 flash instead of using an external flash?

An external speedlight is a workaround, not a fix — it adds bulk and cost. At a fixed €130 the repair restores the camera to full working order and keeps its resale value.
